Identity Fraud on the Rise in the UK

Identity crimes are the fastest growing group of nonviolent crimes in the UK. According to a recent estimate, identity fraud costs citizens 1.2 billion pounds a year.

How do criminals gain access to personal and financial information? The easiest way for an unscrupulous individual to get the information he needs is on the internet. So-called cyber crimes are on the rise and they often leave the virtual world and come into reality. For instance, if a criminal steals your credit card numbers online, he will often use them all around town. So, even though your credit card is not missing, you will be charged for his purchases.

Fortunately, as the crime has become more common, the laws have become much tougher and they frequently include mandatory prison sentences for anyone convicted of Identity fraud. Unfortunately, that is not stopping them. The number of reported fraud cases was up by nearly a quarter in 2010.

So, how can you prevent identity theft? In the real world it is a bit easier. Probably the number one tip we can give you is to never, ever give out financial or personal information to someone you do not know. After all, with the right information it is possible for thieves to apply for bank accounts, credit cards and even a driving licence in your name.

Now, protecting yourself online is a different story. People are often far too careless when it comes to strangers on the internet. Perhaps this is because they think it is all for fun, it is all a game. Well, let us tell you something — there are real criminals online, and all they need is the right piece of information and they can steal your identity. So, do not divulge anything personal online, ever! And make sure your computer is properly protected with antivirus and spyware programs.
